Each runner is frozen in the present, anticipating the future, while relying on the past. The leaves have fallen from the trees leaving the branches barren and without color. Instead, the multi-colored leaves now line the paths of the trails leading the runners to victory and defeat. Racing thoughts freeze as the starter steps onto the field.

The dew on the grass trembles as the runners stampede upon it. Breaths of hope and the steady thumps of well-worn sneakers are the only sounds heard by each runner. The winner is soon to be determined.

Each runner crosses the line. Some dive over the line to beat out a few competitors. Some saunter in feeling as though they haven't an ounce of energy left. As the last runner crosses the line, family and friends disperse among the tired; some excited some disappointed.

As the school buses leave carrying their relieved runners, a veteran cross country athlete crosses the finish line. She bends over breathing deep, lifts her head and lets her tired muscles stretch. She feels the joy rising within her. Her lips form a smile shining like the morning sun. Finally she has completed a race. Finally she has enjoyed it. Finally she has won.
